Perennial sedge (Cyperus laevigatus) found in or near fresh or salt water. It supplied a material, makaloa, from which the finest mats were made by the early Hawaiians. Young plants yielded the best stems for such plaiting. Floor and bed covers, clothing, capes, cloaks, and paʻu skirts were made. (NEAL 86.)
