/ huli.lau /1. n., A variety of large gourd or calabash, used as receptacle for tapa or garments, or for food offerings. Figuratively, a woman, mother, wife. ʻO ka poʻe hulilau ʻole o hope, those with no large gourd calabashes in the back [without wives].
