/ hā.waʻe /1. n., A sea urchin (Tripneustes gratilla). Figuratively, of no character or substance, perhaps so used because of the sayings hāwaʻe kai nui, sea urchin with much juice [and little meat, hence useless], and he hāweʻa ʻiʻo ʻole, sea urchin without meat [or brains].
